INFORMATION YOU SHOULD KNOW [Posted 9/1/09] Please remember to call 911 if you see a crime in action. The non-emergency number is 385-000 to report crimes after they have occurred or to report any suspicious activity. Concerning dogs on the beach, the police department has responsibility for responding to calls concerning dogs on the beach. HOWEVER, manpower restrictions and low priority greatly reduce chance of timely response. If the problem continues or worsens, more calls more often and caller demand to see an officer may improve enforcement. Bottom line, don’t count on police response to dog related calls unless the caller aggressively insists that an officer respond. Concerning graffiti or vandalism to cross walks, benches, etc., please call in any suspicious activity. Police need description of individuals, car description if applicable, license number, etc. Recently a citizen called in a suspicious car parked behind a shopping center. The caller gave a description of the vehicle. A responding officer saw the car and made a stop that resulted in three individuals being charge for graffiti.
CITY OF VIRGINIA BEACH - DEPARTMENT CONTACT INFORMATION For your convenience below is a document which outlines the contact information for the appropriate department at the City of Virginia Beach concerning zoning, permits/inspections, etc.
RIP CURRENT SAFETY TIPS Sunny skies, warm temperatures and the Fourth of July weekend mean more people will be headed to the beach, and the Virginia Beach Department of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) wants to remind beachgoers to be safe. According to the United States Lifesaving Association, 80 percent of rescues by beach lifeguards in the U.S. involve rip currents. These currents are hard to identify and can surprise swimmers, even in shallow water. A rip current is a seaward moving current that circulates water back to the sea after it is pushed ashore by waves. Sometimes mistakenly called rip tides or undertows, these currents actually are not related to tides and don’t necessarily pull people under water. Rather they pull people away from the shore. If caught in a rip current, remain calm and swim parallel to the shore until the pull stops. Then swim back in or tread water and wave for lifeguard assistance. Rip currents are most commonly found along jetties, piers and breaks in underwater sandbars. Few visible indicators are present. As always, the Department of EMS recommends beachgoers swim near lifeguards during daytime hours for maximum safety. For more information, log on to http://www.vbgov.com/dept/ems/safety or contact Linda Ansell at 385-5045.
BEACH "DO & DON'T" RULES We have developed a quick reference to the Do's and Don'ts on our beach. Please post in a conspicuous place!
BEACH ENTRYWAY BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT: As of the December 11, 2007 board meeting there are only two streets participating in the NVBCL's pilot program to improve the beach entryways on the numbered streets. If anyone else is interested in participating please contact Jim Spruance. This program is currently limited to the first four streets' applicants ($2,000). Whenever a group of residents has raised at least $500 and submits a City-approved landscaping plan for a particular numbered street beach entryway, the NVBCL will contribute $500 toward that effort. The NVBCL will provide a list of possible "small" private landscapers and a list of salt tolerant plants. While the City will not provide any additional funding the Administrator of Parks and Recreations Landscape Services Division will provide "quick-fast" review/approval to landscape this portion of City property. Landscape plans can be basically a sketch of the area, a list of materials, and a plan (who and when) to install and maintain (weeding and watering responsibilities).
There are no other special notices at the present time. Please check back at a later date. |
